This week's highlights include new editors at the New Republic, Newsweek, and Quartz’s Talent Lab, as well as a Q&A with Globe and Mail journalist Carly Weeks. Want even more media moves? New Republic: Former Rolling Stone Executive Editor Eric Bates is the new editor of the 101-year-old @NewRepublic magazine. His work history includes a stint as investigative editor at Mother Jones and as an editor at the Intercept where he coordinated the Edward Snowden leaked papers investigation. Bates' new role will have him at the helm of all matters with the magazine and its website. 2. Newsweek Magazine: Kenneth Li (@kenli729) is now managing editor at @Newsweek and is taking over for Kira Bindrim who left for Quartz (see below). Li was a founding editor at Re/Code which was purchased by Vox Media in February. Li will be in charge of the print magazine and the website. He also previously worked for Reuters, The Financial Times and The New York Daily News. 3. Quartz: Former Newsweek Managing Editor Kira Bindrim (@Kira Bind) is now the new editor of Talent Lab at @Qz. Talent Lab is the incubator at Quartz that is designed to develop editors and writers around the world. The idea is to follow and discover emerging writers and then provide or commission them with assignments to grow them as journalists. Bindrim previously worked at Thomson Reuters as an online editor and also at Crain’s New York as a senior producer. 4. Associated Press – Augusta Bureau: Marina Villeneuve (@marinav13) has been hired as statehouse reporter at @ap in Maine and starts on May 23. Villeneuve formerly worked at New Jersey's The Record as a municipal reporter where she covered politics and government issues for the last 18 months. Before that she worked at the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting. Villeneuve began her career as a foreign correspondent at The Washington Post in Bogota, Colombia. 5. Yahoo! Canada: Allan Shifman (@AllanShifman) is the new managing editor of @YahooCanada. Shifman's role will include full editorial control over the Canada Finance page and he will also edit the Canada Finance news application edition of Yahoo! Shifman was promoted from his senior editor position to the new role. His previous experiences include being the assignment editor and online editor at Thomson Reuters where he helped edit the @ReutersUS Twitter feed.
