May StorInt Newsletter, latest SPC performance and EMC Unity storage announcements

In this month's newsletter, we publish our review of the latest SPC-1 & SPC-2 storage performance results and discuss EMC Unity unified storage announcement.
Latest SPC-1 & SPC-2 performance report 

We review the 14 new (11 SPC-1 & 3 SPC-2) benchmark submissions, including another software defined storage submission and a slew of new AFAs. A number of our top ten charts have new members.   Read the report to learn more.  
EMC announces new Unity unified hybrid and all flash storage systems 

EMC has just revamped their mid-range storage line with a new unified architecture supporting file and block storage in a new 2U dual controller architecture. The new Unity storage replaces the whole VNX product line with a brand new storage OS and hardware solutions.  Read the report to learn more.

 TPU and hardware vs. software innovation (round 3) - At Google IO this past month, Google announced they were using their own Tensor Processing Unit hardware in order to do more efficient (and faster) Tensor Flow deep learning activities. They showed a new mini-board with a big heat sink that was PCIe attached to server hardware used as a deep learning offload processor. Read the post find out more.
 
Greybeards deconstruct storage with Brian Biles, CEO and Hugo Patterson, CTO Datrium - Datrium has a new idea on how to build data storage that uses the host compute and it's SSD (NVMe) caching as an integral part of their storage array. IBM has just added Spectrum Accelerate (XIV) storage grid functionality to their FlashSystem900 storage systems in both a single grid element configuration and a rack configuration. Also, IBM has announced release of their DS8888 all flash storage they previewed last fall and has updated the SSDs for their Storwize V7000F and V5000F storage systems.   Read the report to learn more.
