[SCI's StorInt Newsletter] Latest Microsoft ESRP performance results and Fujitsu's new DX 8000 S3 storage family in July's issue

Silverton Consulting
StorInt™ Newsletter - Issue 95 -  July 2015

Dispatches

In this month's newsletter, we publish our review of  Microsoft Exchange 2010-2013 Solutions Reviewed Program performance results for the 1000 mailbox and under category and discuss Fujitsu's new ETERNUS DX8000 S3 series storage system announcement.

There was only one new Microsoft ESRP (Exchange Solution Reviewed Program) submission in the 1000 mailbox and under category, this past nine months,  an HP MSA 1040. The HP MSA storage managed to rank in the top ten in a number of our ESRP metrics. Read the report to learn more ...

The new storage family includes two new systems a revamped ETERNUS DX8700 S3 and new scale-out ETERNUS DX8900 S3 storage system.  This is all made possible with the new DX8000 S3 Qual Star architecture that supports a new front end, any-to-any router that can connect any host FC port to any controller in the system. The ETERNUS DX8900 S3 can scale from two to 24 controllers and the DX8700 S3 can scale from two to eight controllers. Read the report to learn more ...

VMware VSAN 6.0 all-flash & hybrid IO performance at SFD7

VMware's VSAN team talked at Storage Field Day 7  last spring and showed a couple of performance charts at the very end of their session (they were running a bit late). I was pretty interested in their all SSD and hybrid (SSD-disk) performance numbers. Read the post to find out more. ..

GreyBeards on Storage podcast

For this month's podcast,  the GreyBeards talk data aware, scale-out files systems with Peter Godman, Co-founder & CEO Qumulo. Peter had previously been with EMC Isilon and had worked a long time in scale out NAS there. Qumulo takes a somewhat different tack and focuses on providing quicker and better metadata access in their data aware file services. Another significant difference is Qumulo's use of Agile software development to release new storage functionality every two weeks!! I wrote a blog post called Storage systems on Agile which just missed the cut for top post of the month.  Listen to the podcast to learn more...

Latest SPECsfs2008 & SPECsfs2014 performance report
There are still no new SPECsfs2014 submissions other than the reference ones. This time we examine the new SPECsfs20014 report formats and weigh in on what we like and dislike that we see in the reports and the summary page. Read the report to learn more ...

At their Discover conference, HP announced a new high end 3PAR StoreServ product line that includes the 20800 CFA and 20850 AFA. The systems have upgraded hardware, a new Gen 5 ASIC, and new 3PAR OS.  The performance numbers for the AFA are pretty impressive. With 3PAR's data reduction capabilities, the 20850 CFA is able to provide 15PB of usable storage for 6PB of raw capacity.  Read the report to learn more ...
